Tammy Thomas
Tammy Thomas burst into national prominence in 1983 when she was a double winner at the NCAA Championships (50 and 100 free). She also finished second in the 50 fly. Her winning time in the 100 free (48.40) set an American record, and she added the record in the 50 free (22.13) a few weeks later at the U.S.S. Nationals. These accomplishments gained her All-American status for the fourth year -- the first KU women's swimmer to accomplish this. When she left Kansas, she held four school and three Big Eight records, as well as 12 Big Eight individual titles. She was named co-Big Eight Athlete-of-the-Year in 1983 and was named the Outstanding Swimmer of the Big Eight Championships as a junior. In addition to her individual titles, Thomas swam on all of KU's relay teams who held four varsity and conference records. Thomas's best finish in the NCAA Championships was a third place place in the 50 free in 1982. On the national level, she competed in the U.S. Nationals, the U.S. Long Course championships, the World University Games and the World Games trials.
