Art Dalzell
Art Dalzell, a 137-pund pony out of Spring Hill, perhaps, never received the genuine credit due to him. This was because of personal misfortune which cast him concurrently on the same three Kansas championship teams with Wes Santee. Dalzell won only one conference championship and that as a sophomore, when he slogged 1:56.7 thru the mud and rain at Norman in 1952 to upset Oklahoma's Don Carbtree and John Wilkinson for the Outdoor 880 scepter. A closer look at Santee's well-known performances and Dalzell's own figures discloses the greatness of the raven-haired work-pony. Dalzell ran legs on 17 winning baton combinations at the Texas, Kansas, and Drake Relays during his three-year stint at Mt. Oread. Four times he ran the Mile under 4:14.5, with a low of 4:13.7 to win the CCC as a senior. He dipped as low as 1:52.8, a clocking that gained him no better than third in the conference's best 880 race of all-time in the league Outdoor at Ames in 1953. And he spun one of the finest 1320 stints ever recorded in any relay meet, a 3:01, which fired the Jayhawks to a world record Distance Medley figure of 9:50.4 at the 1954 Drake Games. Dalzell also helped Kansas to three consecutive conference cross-country championships, tying for fifth in '51, moving up to third in '52, and to second in '53. In the latter season he also was 14th for the NCAA harrier kinds of that autumn. As a senior he ran fifth in the NCAA Mile field and 6th in the NAAU. And he was a consistent point winner in league meets aside from his sophomoric championship. He ran third in the 1952 Indoor 880; fourth in '53 and second in '54. He also was second in the Indoor Mile of that season. And, in '54, in the thin air of the Outdoor derby at Boulder, he was the only runner from any conference squad to score points in two hauls beyond the 440 when he ran second in the Mile and fifth in the 880. In essence, this means Dalzell was outstanding at any distance from 880 through Four-Miles, a range few runners in conference history can claim.
