Elwyn Dees
Elwyn Dees created a legacy for himself prior to even stepping foot on the University of Kansas campus. Dees, a Lorraine, Kansas native, set a U.S. scholastic shot put record that would stand for over a decade. During his KU shot put career that spanned from 1932-1935, Dees went undefeated in the Big Six Conference with victories in every conference dual meet and conference championship. His accomplishments were seemingly endless including twice breaking the outdoor conference record, winning the Kansas Relays in 1935 after finishing second the two previous years, and winning the Drake Relays in 1933 and 1935. Dees capped off his Kansas career in style by becoming the first Kansas athlete to win a NCAA field event championship in 1935. Aside from his athletic accomplishments, this hard-working farm boy from Lorraine was known for his high work ethic and his friendly personality. Following his standout career for the Jayhawks, Dees stayed on as the athletic trainer for a short period of time. He then had stints at Oklahoma A&M and Nebraska in similar positions. Dees died on August 16, 1995, 60 years after he won the NCAA title with his heroic heave of 51-1 1/8 feet.
