Leo Bookman as a sophomore in 2002 competed in six meets during the indoor season including the Big 12 Championships and the NCAA Championships. At the Big 12 Championships Leo placed first in the 200m with a time of 21.03 in the same meet, Bookman finished third in the 60m dash running a time of 6.76. Bookman would go on to place seventh in the 200m at the NCAA Championships with a time of 21.12 and gain All-American honors. During the 2002 indoor season Bookman was also able to set two Kansas school records, one in the 60m dash semifinal (6.73) and the second in the 200m dash prelims at the NCAA Championships(20.93). The 2002 outdoor season Leo kept up his momentum and continued to compete at a high level winning the Big 12 Championships in the 200m with a time of 20.97 and placing third in the 100m running a season best time of 10.44. Ranked by Track and Field News magazine as one of the top- 10 200m competitors in the United States. In 2003, Bookman won the NCAA Indoor Championship, setting a new Kansas inddor record with a time of 20.53 and earning All-American honors. In the 2003 outdoor season Bookman placed second at the Big 12 Championships in the 200m running a time of 20.37 and kept his crown as 200m Champion with a time of 20.47 while picking up his third career All-American award. The 2004 indoor season Leo saw success as well, winning the Big 12 Championships in the 200m (20.58), receiving his fourth All-American honor in the 200m and his second National Champion award in the same event.
