Forrest Cox was named captain of the KU basketball team as just a sophomore in 1928. By the 1929-30 season, Cox was named an All-American after leading his team to a 14-4 record, an 11-win improvement from the year before. The following season, Kansas improved to 15-3 en route to a conference championship. Cox was also a halfback on the football team where he was named all-conference in 1930 after guiding his team to a conference championship. He was awarded the Big Six honor medal in 1931 which is given to athletes who excelled in both sports as well as in the classroom. Cox later found his calling as a basketball coach as he finished with a record of 203-151 after 18 seasons of coaching at the Universities of Colorado and Montana.
