Charlie Black
Charlie Black, nicknamed the 'Hawk' for his defense, is a four-time All-Big Six player and the only four-time All-American in KU basketball history. During his first year at KU, Black led the Jayhawks to a share of the Big Six Conference title. After the 1943 season, Black spent the next two years fighting in World War II. Black returned to Mt. Oread in 1946 and helped the Jayhawks to a 19-2 record and a return to the NCAA playoffs. Among the all-time scoring leaders in KU history, Black led the Big Six in scoring in 1946. Black's jersey was retired during the 1992 season. He died in December 1992 at the age of 71.
