Scott Russell
A native of Windsor, Ontario, Russell came to KU and established himself as one of the all-time great throwers to wear a Jayhawk uniform. His freshman year, Russell earned All-America honors and was national runner-up in the 35-pound weight toss in indoor competition. He broke the school record in the event with a toss of 67-6 1/4. Outdoors, Russell finished 13th in the javelin at the 1998 NCAA Championships. He won the conference crown and had the second-best throw in school history with a throw of 247-7. Russell's sophomore year was more impressive than his first, however. Indoor, he accumulated eight first place finishes, won the Big 12 title in the 35-pound weight throw and finished fifth at the NCAA Championships. During the outdoor season, Russell threw the shot put, javelin, hammer and discus for the Jayhawks. He had 12 first place finishes, finished third at the NCAA Championships in the javelin and won the conference crown in the hammer toss. In 2000, Russell was the Big 12 record holder in the javelin, the hammer and the weight throw. He won the conference championship in the javelin and hammer throw and took first place at the Canadian Trials in the javelin. He threw a career best 259-= at the Dr. Pepper Invitational. In 2001, Russell finished 13th in the javelin at the World Championships and broke the Canadian national record with a throw of 267-11. He placed third at the NCAA Championships (indoor) in the weight throw.
