Roger Kathol
Roger Kathol and his 2-mile relay teammates faced the ultimate pressure during the 1970 NCAA Indoor Track and Field Championship. In order for the team to win the national championship they had to win their two-mile race, and win they did. After holding off Kansas State, the Jayhawks not only won the race, but set a new world record in the process with a time of 7:25. Kathol, a native Kansan who attended Kapaun High School in Wichita, was a highly recruited half-miler and was instrumental in the Jayhawks' two-mile successes. He was often referred to as the most intelligent member of the track squad and spent his post-Jayhawk days in the medical field.
