Thomas Yergovich
Tom Yergovich was a member of the Kansas track and field teams from 1964 to 1967 and also participated in cross country for four years. His potential was not fully recognized while at KU because of injuries that seemed to plague his career. He, however, was healthy throughout his senior season and took advantage of it. He captained the 1966 cross country team which placed third in the conference meet and 16th at the NCAA Championships. His 1967 indoor season ended with thrilling finishes. After a slow first quarter at the conference meet, Yergie jumped the pack and spurted to a five-yard lead in the 1,000-yard run which he held to the tape to turn back Kansas States star runner Conrad Nightingale in a time of 2:12.5. He then ran the 1,000-yard run at the NCAA meet in Detroit and held on to post a personal best by 1.3 seconds as he finished with a time of 2:10.9 which was good for fourth place. The 1967 outdoor season was also lucrative for Yergovich as he along with Curtis Grindal, Dwight Peck and Jim Ryun broke a World Record in the Distance Medley Relay at the Drake Relays. Their time of 9:33.8 bested the previous World Record of 9:34.0 posted by UCLA just two years earlier. He also happened to be the vice president of the senior class at the University of Kansas.
